What Is Non-Owner SR-22?
A non-owner SR-22 is a liability insurance policy for people who don't own a vehicle but still need to meet SR-22 requirements. It provides coverage when you drive vehicles you don't own — borrowed cars, rental vehicles, or car-sharing vehicles.
Who Needs Non-Owner SR-22?
- You have an SR-22 requirement but sold your vehicle
- You regularly borrow or rent vehicles
- You use ride-sharing or public transportation primarily
- You're between vehicles but need to maintain your SR-22 filing
- You need to reinstate your license but don't currently own a car
What Does It Cover?
Covered
- • Bodily injury liability to others
- • Property damage liability to others
- • Coverage when driving borrowed vehicles
- • Coverage when driving rental vehicles
Not Covered
- • Damage to the vehicle you're driving
- • Your own injuries
- • Vehicles you have regular access to
- • Vehicles owned by household members
Important Limitations
Non-owner SR-22 does not cover vehicles you have regular access to or vehicles owned by members of your household. If you regularly drive a specific vehicle, you may need a standard policy instead. The vehicle owner's insurance would be the primary coverage in most situations.
How to Get Non-Owner SR-22
The process is the same as getting standard SR-22: contact insurance companies, compare quotes, purchase a policy, and have your insurer file the SR-22 with the DMV. Many of the same companies that offer standard SR-22 also offer non-owner policies.
